How It Works

Water and sewer are billed per 1,000 gallons (or CCF — hundred cubic feet). Sewer charges are often higher than water because wastewater treatment is more expensive. The average US household uses about 300 gallons per day.

The Formula

Monthly Cost = (Daily Gallons x 30.44 / 1000) x (Water Rate + Sewer Rate)
Annual = Monthly x 12

Variables

  • CCF — Hundred Cubic Feet — 1 CCF = 748 gallons
  • 30.44 — Average days per month (365/12)

Worked Example

300 gal/day at $5 water + $6 sewer: Monthly = 9,132 gal. Water = $45.66. Sewer = $54.79. Total = $100.45/month, $1,205/year.

Practical Tips

  • Low-flow fixtures save 20-30% on water bills
  • Fix leaky toilets — a running toilet wastes 200+ gallons per day
  • Outdoor irrigation is often exempt from sewer charges — ask your utility
  • Check if your utility has tiered rates — higher usage = higher rate per gallon
