How It Works

Pipe weight varies greatly by material. Knowing pipe weight is essential for structural support, shipping costs, and installation planning. Copper and steel are heavy; PEX is very light.

The Formula

Total Weight = Weight per Foot x Length

Variables

  • W โ€” Total weight in pounds
  • w โ€” Weight per linear foot (material/size dependent)
  • L โ€” Pipe length in feet

Worked Example

100 ft of 3/4" copper Type L: 0.455 lbs/ft x 100 = 45.5 lbs. Same length in PEX: only 6 lbs.

Practical Tips

  • PEX weighs 85-90% less than copper
  • Support spacing depends on pipe weight when full of water
  • Include water weight for structural calculations
  • Cast iron is heaviest but best for sound reduction
