How It Works

Fittings like elbows, tees, and valves create additional friction losses equivalent to a certain length of straight pipe. Adding these equivalent lengths to the actual pipe run gives the total equivalent length used in pressure drop calculations.

The Formula

Total Length = Straight Run + Sum of (Fitting Count x Equivalent Length per Fitting)

Variables

  • L_total โ€” Total equivalent pipe length
  • L_straight โ€” Measured straight pipe run
  • L_eq โ€” Equivalent length per fitting type

Worked Example

A 50 ft run of 3/4" pipe with four 90-degree elbows and two tees: 50 + (4 x 2.0) + (2 x 4.0) = 66 ft total equivalent length.

Practical Tips

  • Fittings typically add 30-50% to straight pipe length
  • Use ball valves instead of gate valves for less resistance
  • Long-radius elbows have lower equivalent lengths than standard elbows
  • Include service valve and meter in calculations
