How It Works

Each pipe fitting creates friction similar to a certain length of straight pipe. Equivalent length tables convert fitting friction to an equivalent straight pipe length for use in pressure drop calculations.

The Formula

Total Eq. Length = Sum of (Count x Equivalent Length) for each fitting type

Variables

  • L_eq โ€” Equivalent length in feet per fitting
  • n โ€” Number of each fitting type

Worked Example

For 3/4" pipe with three 90-degree elbows: 3 x 2.0 ft = 6.0 ft equivalent length to add to the pipe run.

Practical Tips

  • Long-radius elbows have 30-40% less equivalent length than standard
  • Ball valves have much less friction than globe valves
  • Check valves have high equivalent lengths โ€” use swing type when possible
  • Always calculate equivalent length for the specific pipe size
